Nomophobia Turning Into An Epidemic Among Employees

If you can’t help checking on your mobile phone for no reason and can’t live without having it around you at all times, chances are that you are suffering from a mental illness called Nomophobia. It is the fear of having no mobile phones around and leads to a fixation with your mobile phone, day and night.

As observed most employees have a mobile phone losing phobia where they can’t live without their cell phone even for a sec. The only difference is that in some cases, it is at an extreme level regarded as mental illness. These people are unnecessarily bothered about their mobile phones, they either obsess about new messages or live in a constant anticipation with battery life or bad networks.

This behavior is not normal since their minds remain engrossed with their mobiles. They actually keep them away from normalcy. The anxiety transforms into many other diseases like abnormal immune system, high blood pressure, diabetes etc.

One may think what tricks a person to suffer from nomophobia from a normal mobile user, the answer is the extent of usage. Normally, a person checks on messages, receives calls and replies to them on his mobile phones. And then, they keep it somewhere close. But a sufferer of nomophobia can’t do that so easily.

The problem arises when they have reached at an exhaustive state of usage where habituate of constantly receiving and sending mobile messages. This grips their mind and they tend to become mobile addicts as the time passes. It is observant only when one’s peace is disturbed by experiencing uneasiness of the loss of having mobile phones around or not working properly. Then they are found to be unable to put their mobile phones away or to turn it off.

While being on a social networking site, people get accustomed to checking updates. They put their Facebook status and then keep checking on comments and staying hooked with their mobile phones. The addiction gets severe when it is flamed by the respondents, who by their commenting habit complete the cycle.

Similarly with Twitter, when you’re in a habit of checking on constant feeds, one can’t help doing that round the clock. These habits become excuses to what could be a collective symptom of nomophobia.

At office, employees need to use their phone constantly. It involves constant passage of emails, messages and phone calls. It is reported that almost half of working Americans check and respond to their emails in bed, on a holiday or even while driving. This affects their health and work efficiency.
